Trying to understand Medicane dynamics
The European Geophysical Union Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Risks was held in Frascati, Italy between 18 and 21 October 2022. Stavros Dafis from our R&D team presented his work on the dynamics of Mediterranean tropical-like cyclones, aka Medicanes.
Medicanes are destructive cyclones that tend to become stronger under the influence of climate change. Since 2017, Medicanes have hit several Mediterranean countries, resulting in more than half a billion of euros in damage, while several people have died.
This particular study deals with improvements in our understanding of how Medicanes form under different environmental conditions, and tries to explain the contribution of storms near the “eye” of these cyclones. A scientific publication will follow, and it is planned to be open-access soon.
